The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced a toll-free number to report high-risk cattle in the U.S. According to APHIS, the toll-free number for the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) surveillance program is 1(866) 536-7593. APHIS explains that as part of its expanded BSE surveillance effort, it will work closely with cattle producers, renderers, veterinarians, and others to obtain samples from high-risk cattle targeted in this program. APHIS states that toll-free callers reporting high-risk cattle will connect with a local APHIS office that will provide additional information. 2. FMC Web Site to be Down Most of the Day on June 19, 2004

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has issued a notice announcing that its Web site will be down for maintenance on Saturday, June 19, 2004 between approximately 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The FMC states that its SERVCON (the FMC's electronic filing system) can be directly accessed at https://servcon.fmc.gov. 3. USDA Listening Sessions on National Animal Identification Program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced that it will hold a series of listening sessions across the country in June-August 2004 to discuss the development, structure and implementation of a national animal identification program for all livestock and poultry animals. 4. BIS Settles with Stoelting Company for Illegal Polygraph Exports

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has issued a press release stating that Stoelting Company of Wood Dale, IL has agreed to a $44,000 civil penalty and a five-year denial of export privileges to settle charges that it exported polygraph machines to China without the required export licenses, in violation of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). 5. BIS Settlement for Unlicensed Exports of Gas & Fire Detection Equipment

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has issued a press release stating that General Monitors of Lake Forest, CA has agreed to pay a $40,000 civil penalty to settle charges that it violated the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) when it failed to obtain the required export licenses for shipments of gas and fire detection equipment to India.
