American Shipper reports that a recent study sponsored by the Port of Long Beach shows that containerized cargo volume at Los Angeles-Long Beach is expected to triple in 25 years. To adjust for this expected growth, the article states that larger vessels are being introduced by ocean carriers, and ports are adjusting their berth space to accommodate them; however, land-side infrastructure improvements are not keeping pace. The Journal of Commerce states that the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (TSA) for the eastbound trans-Pacific trade is warning shippers to expect strict enforcement of storage charges at ports and rail yards in order to encourage quick delivery, etc. (JoC, April 25, 2005. www.joc.com )

3. China's Apparel Exports to U.S. Rise at a Slower Pace

According to The Wall Street Journal, the China Chamber of Commerce for Imports and Exports of Textiles said that in March 2005 the country's apparel exports to the U.S. rose at a slower pace than in February 2005. In March China's exports of the apparel to the U.S. rose 49% from a year earlier, while in February its exports of apparel to the U.S. more than doubled from a year earlier, after rising 80% in January.
