The Government Accountability Office has issued testimony to a subcommittee of the House Committee on the Judiciary, which states that, among other things, the Department of Homeland Security Privacy Office has made significant progress in carrying out its statutory responsibilities under the Privacy Act of 1974 and E-Government Act of 2002 (E-Gov Act), but limited Privacy Act progress has been made in updating notices for systems of records that were in existence prior to the creation of DHS. 2. APHIS Announces Four Pest Risk Analyses for Fruits/Veggies from Africa

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has issued a press release announcing the availability of four pest risk analyses, for review and comment (published as four separate notices in the July 18, 2007 Federal Register), evaluating the risks associated with the importation into the U.S. of peeled baby carrots and baby corn from Kenya, Ribes species from South Africa and peppers, eggplant and okra from Ghana. The analyses conclude that these commodities can be safely imported subject to one or more of five designated phytosanitary measures, and therefore are eligible for the new notice-based approval process. Consideration will be given to comments received on or before September 17, 2007. 3. FDA Posts Various Notices to its Web Site

The Food and Drug Administration has posted the following notices to its Web site:

FDA expands its warning about risk of botulism poisoning from certain Castleberry products. FDA has issued a news release announcing that it is expanding its earlier warning about the risk of botulism poisoning from certain Castleberry products. FDA states that this expansion is for consumers and pet owners regarding canned food products and dog food produced by Castleberry's Food Company of Augusta, Georgia, due to the risk of botulinum toxin. FDA to hold public hearing on use of symbols to communicate nutrition info, etc. FDA has posted a notice announcing that it will be holding a public hearing on the use of symbols to communicate nutrition information, consideration of consumer studies, and nutritional criteria on September 10-11, 2007 in Adelphi, Maryland. 2007 Cardiovascular Biomarkers & Surrogate Endpoints Symposium. FDA has posted a notice announcing that the 2007 Cardiovascular Biomarkers & Surrogate Endpoints Symposium will be held on October 17-19, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland. Cooperative agreement to support JIFSAN. FDA has posted a notice announcing its intention to receive and consider a single source application for the award of a cooperative agreement in fiscal year 2007 to the University of Maryland, College Park to support the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN). This award will strengthen existing programs and allow expansion of JIFSAN's education, outreach and applied research programs and external partnerships that have already been established.
