CBP Posts FY 2008 Trade Statistics, $34.5 Billion in Duty Revenue Collected

(Every year, CBP processes on average 417 million people, 128 million trucks and cars, and 25 million cargo containers at ports of entry. On a typical day, more than 1.1 million passengers and pedestrians, including over 678,000 aliens, over 242,000 air passengers, over 352,000 privately owned vehicles, and over 82,000 entries of shipments of goods are processed at the nation's borders. CBP must detect and remove the people and goods that pose a threat from the legitimate annual flow of over 400 million people, 25 million cargo containers, and 128 million conveyances.)
Trade-Related Statistics Included in Update
The following are highlights of the trade-related statistics presented in update. In FY 2008:
CBP processed about 31 million trade entries and collected duty payments totaling approximately $34.5 billion.
- of U.S. imports came from the following top five countries of import origin: Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, and Germany.
U.S. exports totaled $1.4 trillion.
Over 288 million passengers and pedestrians, and more than 121 million conveyances were processed at land borders.
Over 26 million passengers and crew and 11 million cargo containers were processed at U.S. seaports.

CBP adds that in late 2008, the U.S. international trade deficit was $56.5 billion, with imports of goods, including industrial supplies, exceeding U.S. exports.
