CIFA monetary penalties. On October 27, 2010, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CIFA) issued regulations amending the Agriculture and Agri-Food Administrative Monetary Penalties Regulations in order to increase the administrative monetary penalties (AMPs) for certain violations of the Plant Protection Act and the Health of Animals Act. For violations committed in the course of business, the new penalties are: $1,300 for a minor violation (from $500); $6,000 for a serious violation (from $2000), and $10,000 for a very serious violation (from $4000). For violations committed other than in the course of business, the new penalties are: $500 for a minor violation (from $100); $800 for a serious violation (from $200); and $1,300 for a very serious violation (from $400). CIFA also issued a press release on the increase.
