Japan Says it Will Decide Whether to Join TPP Talks by June 2011

Xinhuanet.com reports that Japan could begin consultations with the United States and other countries trying to build a regional free trade agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership as the Cabinet approved the government's latest policy on free trade.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan indicated his intention to join TPP negotiations last month. But the country is divided over joining the agreement. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said at a news conference that Japan is expected to decide whether to join the negotiations of the multilateral trade agreement around next June.
