  • EU to cut banana import tariffs. The European Parliament has announced its support of a 2009 trade deal with between the U.S., and 11 Latin American countries under which the EU will gradually cut its import tariffs on bananas from Latin America. U.S. multinationals will also enjoy better access to the EU market.
  • Easing consumer cross-border trade. The EC's proposals to ease cross-border trade advanced as EU Member States formally adopted the Consumer Rights Directive. The directive will harmonize consumers' rights in distance sales, in particular on the Internet. The directive must be approved by the Parliament before taking effect.
