Updated CPSC Pool/Spa Drain Cover Standard Takes Effect Sept 6
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a final rule, effective September 6, 2011, which incorporates by reference the successor pool and spa drain cover standard, ANSI/APSP-16 2011, into its regulations implementing the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGB Act).

(The VGB Act, which became law in December 2007, requires that each swimming pool or spa drain cover manufactured, distributed, or entered into commerce in the U.S. conform to the entrapment protection standards of the 2007 ANSI/ASME A112.19.8 standard or any successor standard regulating swimming pool or spa drain covers.)
Successor Substantially Identical to Previous Standard/Addenda
CPSC states that the 2011 successor standard is substantively identical to the 2007 version and its two subsequent addenda, one of which was on the ultraviolet light exposure test and the other on self-contained spa fittings.
In addition, ANSI/ASME is in the process of withdrawing the 2007 version of the standard. Therefore, CPSC believes it is important to have a successor standard in place before the withdrawal is complete.
