ATF Seeks Add’l Comments on Explosives Imports Info Collection

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is seeking additional comments by May 17, 2012, on the extension of its existing information collection on identification of imported explosives materials.

Importers Required to Mark All Imported Explosives

All licensed importers are required to identify by marking all explosive materials they import for sale or distribution. According to ATF, this process provides valuable information in explosion and bombing investigations.

ATF Estimates 15 Respondents and 45 Burden Hours Annually

ATF estimates that 15 respondents will spend 1 hour placing marks of identification on imported explosives 3 times annually, for a total of 45 burden hours.

Comments Requested on Ways to Minimize Burden, Etc.

ATF is asking for comments from the public and affected agencies on: (1) whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the agency, including whether the information will have practical utility; (2) the accuracy of the agency’s estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of information, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions used; (3) ways to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected; and (4) ways to minimize the burden of the collection of information on those who are to respond, including through the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques or other forms of information technology, e.g., permitting electronic submission of responses.
