FERC Begins Scoping Process on Coos Bay LNG Export Project

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is launching the scoping process for the Environmental Impact Statement it will use in its decision-making process on whether the Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas export terminal is in the public interest, it said in a Federal Register notice scheduled for Aug. 13. The proposed LNG export project in Coos County, Ore., has generated controversy and is one of several similar projects seeking federal approval.

The Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy, Department of Agriculture Forest Service, and the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and Fish and Wildlife Service are cooperating in preparation of the EIS, and the BLM and Forest Service propose to adopt the FERC EIS.

The scoping process is designed to gather input to help the Commission staff determine what issues should be evaluated in the EIS. The process closes Sept. 4. Public hearings are scheduled for Aug. 27-28, at Southwestern Oregon Community College, Coos Bay, Ore., and Aug. 29 at Oregon Institute of Technology, Klamath Falls, Ore.
