Census Discusses AES Fatal Error Response Codes 111 and 502

The Census Bureau sent out AES Broadcast #2012080 as part of a series of monthly educational broadcast messages on fatal errors in the Automated Export System. This month Census is highlighting AES error codes 111 (U.S. State of Origin Code Must Be “PR”) and 502 (Export Information Code Unknown). The broadcast covers the reasons for these error messages and how to resolve them, as follows:

Fatal Error Response Code 111: U.S. State of Origin Code Must Be “PR”

Reason: The U.S. State of Origin Code reported was not Puerto Rico (PR) and the Country of Ultimate Destination Code reported was United States (US).

Resolution: Only the U.S. State of Origin Code for Puerto Rico (PR) can be reported as the U.S. State of Origin Code for a shipment with the Country of Ultimate Destination the United States. Verify the U.S. State of Origin Code and the Country of Ultimate Destination Code, correct the shipment and resubmit.

Fatal Error Response Code 502: Export Information Code Unknown

Reason: The Export Information Code reported is not valid in AES.

Resolution: The Export Information Code must be reported on each shipment. Valid Export Information Codes reportable in AES are contained in Appendix E - Export Information Codes and Reporting Guidelines (here).
