Shipping Committee to Meet Jan. 23

The State Department's Shipping Coordinating Committee will meet at 8 a.m. Jan. 23 in Room 5-1224 of the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters Building, 2100 Second Street, SW, Washington, D.C., to prepare for the meeting of the International Maritime Organization Subcommittee on Bulk Liquids and Gases Feb. 4-8 in the U.K.

Agenda items include: Evaluation of safety and pollution hazards of chemicals and preparation of consequential amendments; Guidelines for implementation of the BWM Convention; Producing a manual on "Ballast Water Management"; Improved and new technologies approved for ballast water management systems; International measures for minimizing the transfer of invasive aquatic species through biofouling; An international code of safety for ships using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels; Development of a Code for the transport and handling of limited amounts of hazardous and noxious liquid substances in bulk on offshore support vessels.
