- Argentina dispute panel established. The EU (DS438), Japan (DS444), and U.S. (DS445) all filed disputes against Argentina in Measures Affecting the Importation of Goods, claiming that Argentina's use of import licenses was inconsistent with GATT 1994 and the Import Licensing Agreement. The Dispute Settlement Board (DSB) has established a single panel to examine the three cases. Argentina feels the panel should not rule on measures because the country repealed the controversial automatic and non-automatic import licenses procedures three days before the panel was established. - Lamy speech on growth in bilateral trade governance. Director-General Pascal Lamy gave a speech today at the IISS-Oberoi Discussion Forum in Delhi, India. The speech focused on the role of geopolitics and trade, with Lamy noting that "while trade and growth can contribute to easing geopolitical tensions, we should also remember that geopolitical tensions can impact trade and growth." Lamy wants to bring "foreign policy interests back to the table" in order to bolster support for more effective multi-lateral trade operations. (here)
