Commerce General Counsel Kerry to Take Over as Acting Secretary June 1

Cameron Kerry will take over as Acting Secretary of Commerce June 1, according to an internal letter from current Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank to Commerce Department employees. Blank is to become Chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her last day at Commerce will be May 31, she said.

Penny Pritzker was nominated May 2 to be Commerce Secretary, but is just beginning the nomination process 13050221). Commerce has been without a Congressionally-confirmed head since June 2012, when then-Assistant Secretary Blank took over for Gary Locke.

Cameron Kerry is the younger brother of current Secretary of State John Kerry. He has been General Counsel at Commerce since 2009. His Commerce Department biography is (here).

In her May 13 letter, Blank also said current Under Secretary of Standards and Technology Patrick Gallagher will take over as Acting Deputy Secretary. Gallagher is also Director of the National Insititute of Standards and Technology. His NIST biography is (here).
