BIS Penalizes Western Advanced Engineering, Bass Pro for EAR Violations
The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on June 12 prohibited California-based Western Advanced Engineering Company from directly or indirectly participating in transactions that involve commodities, software or technology subject to the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) for three years. BIS determined the firm exported a 24’’ Hot Melt Prepreg Machine for Uni-directional Tape from the U.S. to Spain without the proper U.S. government authorization. BIS is also charging Ohio-based Litzler Co., a company that it considers a successor to Western Advanced Engineering Company.

BIS also notified Missouri-based Bass Pro on June 10 that it is initiating a proceeding against the company over nine alleged EAR violations. Bass Pro exported to Canada, China and Cyprus from 2010 to 2011 optical sighting devices without the proper U.S. government authorization, BIS said. Bass Pro is required to pay $25,000 to BIS within 30 days of the order. If the payment is made, Bass Pro will retain all export privileges, BIS said.
