FDA to Focus Sampling on Processed Avocados and Fresh Herbs in FY18

The Food and Drug Administration will focus on processed avocados and fresh herbs, specifically cilantro, basil and parsley, in its microbiological sampling program for fiscal years 2017 and 2018, CBP said in a CSMS message. FDA is currently seeking feedback “to ensure that sample collection is done as effectively and efficiently as possible,” including recommendations on how to increase the efficiency of sample collection, additional factors to take into account when reviewing the results of the sampling assignment and input on any food safety initiatives or industry practices related to these commodities. FDA is working “to engage stakeholders earlier and more frequently throughout the assignment development process,” it said.

FDA’s avocado sampling will focus on processed avocado, including fresh cut and frozen, avocado puree, refrigerated or frozen avocado pulp with additives, and guacamole, FDA said in a draft information sheet. Whole avocados will not be sampled, nor will avocados intended for beverage or products that have undergone a pathogen kill step. Sampling of fresh herbs will cover fresh, raw parsley, cilantro and basil of “all varieties,” it said in another draft information sheet. Frozen, chopped, dried and/or fresh herbs intended for further processing will not be collected. Samples will be collected Monday through Thursday, throughout the year, and may be collected from the same importer multiple times, the agency said.

“The microbiological surveillance sampling model involves focusing surveillance sampling resources on foods with knowledge and data gaps, collecting a statistically significant number of samples over a shorter period of time, typically 12 to 18 months, that can proactively identify public health risks, and establishing standardized, transparent, and collaborative processes and communications,” FDA said. Sampling in FY16 focused on hot peppers and cucumbers, while in FY15 FDA sampled avocados, sprouts and raw milk cheese (see 1511250010).
