FWS Deploys New Electronic Import-Export Licensing System
The Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced a new electronic system for importers and exporters to obtain a FWS import/export license. The voluntary eLicense system allows importers and exporters to apply for a new license or renew or amend a current or expired license from FWS “via a secured Internet web site,” FWS said. “The system facilitates clearance of wildlife imports and exports, allowing users to store data for future use and communicate by e-mail with Service license issuers,” FWS said.

According to FWS, the new system “will be available for use by any individual or company that imports or exports wildlife for commercial purposes.” FWS will continue to accept applications for import/export licenses in paper form “for those who prefer that method of applying,” but the agency encourages “importers and exporters to take advantage of the new electronic application system,” it said.
FWS posted a frequently asked questions webpage on the new system, as well as contact information for eLicense offices. “No special software is required, and no additional fees are charged for using eLicense,” it said. “There is no reason for you to have a USFWS import/export license if you do not commercially import or export wildlife. Requests for license renewals will be reviewed for import/export activity,” FWS said.
