The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notices as of Nov. 28 (some may also be given separate headlines):

  • Government announces expanded support for digital technology in international trade. Minister of International Trade Diversification Jim Carr, during his visit to a tech firm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on Nov. 28 announced that the Government of Canada is expanding support for digital technology in international markets. Focusing on innovation, technology and service exports, he outlined the plan to make Canada the most globally connected economy.
  • Opening of the new application period for new CPTTP TRQs. The Minister of International Trade Diversification announced Nov. 26 that due to Canada’s commitments under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) it has released 20 new tariff rate quotas and determined how they will be allocated for the 2018/2019 and 2019 TRQ years. Applications for the allocation under the new CPTPP TRQs may be submitted to Global Affairs Canada by email to the applicable email address identified in each notice. The deadline for submitting an application is Dec. 12, 2018.
  • Casual donations for tariff item No. 9816.00.00. The Canada Border Services Agency issued an update Nov. 26 after a technical review of Memorandum D2-1-4, which outlines and explains the interpretation of tariff item No. 9816.00.00 set out in the Schedule to the Customs Tariff. The tariff item defines: "Casual donations sent by persons abroad to friends in Canada, or imported personally by persons who are not residents of Canada as gifts to friends, and not being advertising matter, tobacco or alcoholic beverages, when the value thereof does not exceed sixty dollars in any one case."
  • Product Recalls: IKEA Canada recalls GLIVARP frosted white extendable dining tables manufactured in Romania, for impact injury and laceration hazards; OHLINS RACING AB recalls front air suspension bicycle forks manufactured in Taiwan, for injury hazard.
