Canadian Government Notices as of Jan. 22

The government of Canada recently issued the following trade-related notices as of Jan. 22 (some may also be given separate headlines):

  • Canada’s international transactions in securities for November 2018. Statistics Canada reported Jan. 18 that foreign investors acquired $9.5 billion of Canadian securities in November 2018, mainly in bonds; and Canadian investors reduced their holdings of foreign securities by $4.1 billion in the same month, selling U.S. shares. As a result, international transactions in securities generated a net inflow of funds of $13.5 billion in the Canadian economy in November, the largest inflow since November 2017.
  • CBSA issues notice of final determination on carbon steel welded pipe. The Canada Border Services Agency on Jan. 16 issued a final determination of dumping of carbon steel welded pipe from Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey (other than one company) and Vietnam. It also terminated the investigation of dumping of carbon steel welded pipe by Erbosan Erciyas Boru Sanayii ve Ticaret A.S. from Turkey. A Statement of Reasons will be available by Jan. 31. The Canadian International Trade Tribunal continues its inquiry into the question of injury to the domestic industry and will make an order or finding by Feb. 15, 2019.
  • Product Recalls: Mustang Survival ULC recalls certain MRV170 Swiftwater Rescue Vests manufactured in Canada, for physical hazard related to inflation device not functioning if pull handle detaches from chord; Conair Consumers Product ULC recalls Cuisinart Vertical Waffle Iron manufactured in China, for electric shock hazard; SRAM recalls three-speed internal gear hub with coaster brake for bicycle manufactured in Taiwan, for crash and fall hazards; HP Inc. Canada recalls third-party lithium-ion batteries in notebook computers and mobile workstations manufactured in China, for fire and burn hazards; JumpSport recalls manuals for folding mini-trampolines manufactured in China, for injury hazard if correct folding is not performed; TJX Canada recalls Aroma Home brand USB Heated Hotties heating pads manufactured in China, for burn and fire hazards.
