CBP Formally Allows 1 of 3 IDs for Global Business Identifier, Extends Pilot
CBP is modifying its pilot testing a new global business identifier (GBI) to replace the manufacturer ID so that participants in the test can use any of three entity identifiers, instead of all three, the agency said in a notice released June 20, as expected (see 2304240042). CBP is also extending the pilot through Feb. 14, 2024. The pilot had been set to end July 31.

CBP had in April said it would be changing its GBI evaluative proof of concept so that participants could use any one of the Dun & Bradstreet number, Global Location Number from GS1 or Legal Entity Identifier from the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) for the manufacturers, shippers and sellers (optionally, exporters, distributors and packagers) of merchandise covered by entries allowed in the pilot, in an effort to boost participation.
CBP also in the notice corrected the web address it provided in earlier notices for participants to obtain the Legal Entity Identifier. The correct address is here, from which participants can choose from a list of certified third-party entities that provide LEIs.
