Biden, Xi Won't Talk 301 Tariffs in Meeting This Week, US Official Says

President Joe Biden isn’t planning to bring up issues surrounding Section 301 tariffs in a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in California on Nov. 15, a senior administration official said during a call with reporters last week. The official said the “question of economic and trade relationship” will be discussed, but the two leaders likely won’t delve into specifics.

“The President at every meeting and engagement with President Xi has brought up the importance of a level playing field for American companies. And, of course, that’s an integral part of the 301,” the official said. “But I don’t anticipate that we’ll get into the details of that. We’ll keep it a broader strategic view.”

The official added: "We’re not talking about a long list of outcomes or deliverables. The goals here really are about managing the competition, preventing the downside risk of conflict and ensuring channels of communication are open."
