Democratic Senators Ask for No Reduction in Section 301 Tariffs
Amid a four-year review of Section 301 tariffs that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative will end soon (see 2404170074), Democratic senators led by Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio called on President Joe Biden to maintain the tariffs on China. In a short May 2 letter, they said the country continues to disrupt global supply chains and distort markets across such sectors as steel, solar technology and electric vehicles.

Brown, joined by Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, and Chuck Schumer of New York, said in the letter that they want no reduction in the tariffs. Calling the tariffs “a critical piece of a pro-worker trade agenda,” the senators said they are necessary to “level the playing field” with China.
“China has continued to cheat, circumvent, and manipulate to artificially strengthen its economy and harm the United States,” they said.
