Bill to Require CPSC Safety Standard for Retractable Awnings Passes House
A bipartisan bill to require the Consumer Product Safety Commission to promulgate a mandatory consumer product safety standard for retractable awnings passed the House May 14 by voice vote.

Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., in annoucing the bill introduced by Rep. Troy Balderson, R-Ohio, and Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., and said a recall in 2019 covered 270,000 awnings. He said there has been one death and six serious injuries from unexpected awning movements. Balderson explained that the man that died was the father of a staffer working for the House Energy and Commerce Committee at the time of the accident.
