Commerce to Propose Import Restrictions on Chinese Autonomous Vehicle Parts, Report Says
The Bureau of Industry and Security has further defined the scope of its upcoming proposed rule restricting imports of certain Chinese connected vehicle parts, Reuters reported this week.

Under the rule, Chinese software would be prohibited in vehicles with Level 3 automation and above, which would effectively ban Chinese-made autonomous vehicles from testing on U.S. roads, the report says. Vehicles with Chinese-developed advanced wireless communications modules also would be forbidden from U.S. roads.
In a statement, the Commerce Department said it "is concerned about the national security risks associated with connected technologies in connected vehicles." It said the rule “will focus on specific systems of concern” within such vehicles. Industry will have a chance to review the proposal and submit comments.
A BIS official said last month that the agency plans to release the rule sometime this month (see 2407170043), building on an advance notice of proposed rulemaking released in February (see 2402290034).
