Consumer Interest Group Opposes US-EU Tariff Threats

The Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD), a forum of U.S. and EU consumer organizations, issued a statement Feb. 24 urging the Trump administration to cease threatening tariffs on the European Union.

The organization similarly called for the EU to refrain from imposing retaliatory tariffs and to resist pressure to weaken "digital and competition policies such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA)." TACD chastised the Trump administration for using trade policy to influence domestic affairs, saying: "tariffs should never be used as a tool to pressure countries over legitimate domestic policymaking."

TACD comprises 76 organizations in the U.S. and the EU that advocate for consumer interests in policymaking.

"In place of entering into a spiral of trade retaliation, we call on the U.S. and the EU to redirect their energy towards a cooperation to level the global playing field and serve consumers’ interests," the organization said. "Aligning how products are controlled and taxed at customs, across the Atlantic, could have a positive impact on the global economy and contribute to better protecting consumers."
