CPPA Will Soon Seek Comments on Data Deletion Draft

California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) board members voted 5-0 at their Friday meeting to advance draft rules about data deletion to a formal rulemaking.

As the California Delete Act requires, the CPPA posted the draft rules last month for the upcoming data deletion mechanism. After reviewing the draft, some privacy experts told us that they’re closely watching how the agency defines a direct relationship (see 2503050020).

Regulations for implementing the Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) remain far from final. The next step is for the CPPA to provide a 45-day comment period. When the board took a similar action in a separate proceeding to move automated decision-making technology and other rules to a formal rulemaking, the agency didn’t open public comment until about two weeks after the board’s vote.
