Senator Reintroduces Bill to Use Data Analytics to Counter Sanctions Evasion

Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., reintroduced a bill March 25 that would require CBP to create a four-year pilot program to use data analytics to identify vessels evading sanctions and export controls.

The program would aim to identify vessels that seek to avoid detection by turning off or manipulating transponders that broadcast their identification, location and navigation information.

The Vessel Tracking for Sanctions Enforcement Act, which has three bipartisan co-sponsors, was referred to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which approved the bill in the last Congress.
