White House Official: US Should Export, Not Ban, Open-Weight AI Models
Michael Kratsios, director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, suggested this week that the U.S. is against imposing export controls on open-weight AI models.

"A year ago, policymakers in DC were debating a ban on open weight models," he said Aug. 5 in a social media post. "From day one, the Trump administration changed course and made clear America needs to offer the best open models for innovators to build on and for America to export." He added: "Today, our companies are leading."
Kratsios' comments were in response to an OpenAI announcement about the release of two new "state-of-the-art open-weight language models."
