Lawmaker Praises Expected Terrorist Label for Muslim Brotherhood

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said Aug. 13 that she welcomes the Trump administration’s newly revealed plans to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

“Long overdue,” she said, adding that the move will “protect our national security.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the "Sid & Friends In The Morning"radio show Aug. 12 that a Muslim Brotherhood designation is “in the works.”

Stefanik is co-sponsoring a bill reintroduced in July that would require the executive branch to designate the Egypt-based group a Foreign Terrorist Organization (see 2507170001). The legislation cites the Muslim Brotherhood’s support for violent extremist groups, including Gaza-based Hamas.
