CTA Cites Negative Impact of State Privacy Laws in Comments to DOJ

The patchwork of more than 20 state privacy laws confuses consumers and hinders innovation for companies of all sizes, Consumer Technology Association noted in a post Friday.

CTA Senior Directory of Regulatory Affairs Rachel Nemeth cited the association’s Sept. 15 comments to DOJ. In August, Justice and the National Economic Council asked for help identifying state laws that negatively affect the economy or interstate commerce (see 2509220061).

“This fragmented landscape creates confusion for consumers, who face uneven rights depending on where they live,” Nemeth wrote. “On top of that, it unduly burdens startups and small to mid-sized companies who must navigate the maze of differing, and sometimes conflicting rules. Unlike larger companies, these companies lack the resources to navigate a fragmented regulatory landscape. Burdening them with complex, state-by-state compliance will distract them from groundbreaking advancements, suppressing innovation and ceding a competitive edge to our global adversaries.”
