Senate Democrats Oppose Sanctions Lifting for Former Paraguay President
Three Senate Democrats criticized the Trump administration late Oct. 9 for removing sanctions on former Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes (see 2510060056).

In a joint statement, Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Senate Banking Committee ranking member Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, accused the administration of “turning a blind eye to the past documented corruption" of Cartes.
The Treasury Department, which removed Cartes from its Specially Designated Nationals List Oct. 6, the White House and the State Department didn’t respond to requests for comment on the senators' statement. The Biden administration sanctioned Cartes in January 2023, citing his "involvement in the rampant corruption that undermines democratic institutions in Paraguay."
