Senator Calls for More Sanctions on Russia’s Energy Sector

Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., urged the Trump administration late Oct. 22 to increase sanctions on the “shadow fleet” of tankers Russia uses to get around the international price cap on its oil.

While Shaheen welcomed the administration’s move to sanction two major Russian oil companies (see 2510220050), she said more action is needed to cut off revenue to Moscow’s war machine and force Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek peace with Ukraine.

Shaheen introduced a bill in September that would expand U.S. sanctions authorities against the shadow fleet (see 2509190060). The legislation is pending before the Foreign Relations Committee.
