Sheep Farmers Ask for Section 201 Investigation on Lamb Imports
The American Sheep Industry Association formally asked that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative initiate a safeguard investigation on lamb imports, the group announced last week. The trade group's request follows a request by two Utah members of the House in July for the same action (see 2507240058).

The group said lamb ranchers are suffering "serious economic injury" from imported lamb, which they say is often sold below domestic prices. They hired Kelley Drye and Georgetown Economic Services to substantiate their request, and they said the firms found that almost 45% more lamb was imported in 2024 compared with 2020, with domestic production's market share falling by more than nine percentage points over those years. In 2020, imported lamb already accounted for a majority of consumption, and by 2024, imports accounted for 70% of the market, the association said.
