Senate Resolution Would Endorse US Sanctions on Russian Oil Firms

A bipartisan group of 12 senators led by Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., introduced a resolution Nov. 6 welcoming the Trump administration’s recent decision to sanction two major Russian oil companies to pressure Moscow to seek peace with Ukraine (see 2510220050).

The resolution recommends that U.S. allies and partners end all contracts with the two companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, to avoid potential exposure to secondary sanctions. It also calls on the U.S. and its allies to apply additional sanctions on Russian energy sources.

While the resolution notes that the EU has reduced its dependence on Russian fossil fuels by about 90% since Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it “expresses concern that Hungary has shown no sign of reducing its dependence on Russian fossil fuels.”

The resolution was referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
