EU Council Looks to Elevate Coordination in Enforcing Fair Trade Rules for Ag Goods
The Council of the European Union this week took two actions on trade in the agricultural and food sector.

First, the council said it struck a provisional deal with the European Parliament on a regulation that would boost cooperation between EU authorities charged with enforcing rules on unfair trading practices in the agricultural and food supply chain. The deal establishes a "comprehensive set of rules for cross-border cooperation against unfair trading practices in business-to-business relationships within the agricultural and food supply chain." It also sets up a "mutual assistance mechanism" to let national enforcement authorities collaborate on investigations.
Second, the council formally authorized the European Commission to open talks with the U.K. on an agreement for a "common sanitary and phytosanitary area" to reduce the burden of trading agricultural goods between the two parties and to "link greenhouse emissions trading systems."
