Senator Blocks Vote on Stopping Arms Sales to UAE

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., tried and failed Nov. 20 to have the Senate vote on his bill to prohibit U.S. arms sales to the United Arab Emirates until the UAE ends its material support for Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia (see 2503110073).

Van Hollen asked for unanimous consent for the Senate to take up the Stand Up for Sudan Act, but Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, objected, saying the legislation would hurt a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. She said she prefers the Trump administration’s approach of pursuing a peace deal in Sudan.
