“The Department is reviewing the information you provided related to the Arctic LNG 2 project, and we will give careful consideration to imposing sanctions in response,” says the letter, signed by Paul Guaglianone, senior bureau official in State's Bureau of Legislative Affairs.
The letter was addressed to Senate Banking Committee ranking member Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who led a group of Senate Democrats in urging the China sanctions in September and October (see 2510240030 and 2509190049). The lawmakers said the Arctic LNG 2 project was halted by U.S. sanctions under the Biden administration but was revived during the Trump administration and was helping Russia fund its invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement releasing the State Department’s letter, Warren said Congress should review any unwinding of U.S. sanctions the Trump administration proposes for Russia. She accused President Donald Trump of “trying to force Ukraine to surrender and reward Russia by reintegrating it into the global economy.”
