US Issues Syria Sanctions Relief Guidance
The Treasury, Commerce and State departments released new guidance this week about the Syria-related sanctions and export control relief that's available to companies and other organizations and what Syria-related restrictions still remain (see 2508280029, 2505230073 and 2506160030). The three-page document is aimed at encouraging "U.S. private sector and foreign partner reengagement in Syria."

Although trade restrictions and sanctions should no longer act as a "barrier to most business involving Syria," the guidance stresses that sanctions remain on the "worst of the worst," such as human rights abusers and Bashar al-Assad and his associates. The agencies said the U.S. "continues to review" Syria’s State Sponsor of Terrorism designation, and most Commerce Control List items going to Syria still need an export license.
