Lawmaker Says Iraqi Judge May Deserve Sanctions for Iran Ties
Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged the Trump administration Jan. 6 to consider sanctioning Faiq Zaidan, head of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, for helping Iran increase its influence over Iraq.

“Zaidan and his backers in Iran are actively working to entrench their control over Iraq and install a weak and compliant prime minister,” Wilson wrote on X. “This outcome is unacceptable and poses a serious threat to Iraq’s future and U.S. interests.”
Wilson also said he might pursue legislation to sanction Zaidan and “affiliated militia leaders.” He already has introduced a bill that would designate Iran’s “puppet militias in Iraq” as foreign terrorist organizations (see 2504030016).
