Korean Trade Minister Visits Washington to Talk Digital Issues

South Korea's trade minister is in Washington to meet with members of Congress and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to try to calm tensions over a recent law passed in South Korea on data privacy, a Korean newspaper reported.

Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo, told reporters at Dulles International Airport in suburban Washington, D.C., on Jan. 11: "There seems to be a misunderstanding on the U.S. side regarding the South Korean government’s regulatory moves on online platforms. It is necessary to clearly and accurately explain our policy and legislative intentions."

Asia Society Policy Institute Vice President Wendy Cutler said late last week that the U.S. has not threatened higher tariffs over the disagreement, but rather disinvited a delegation late last year "to send our signal of displeasure."

Cutler, who was the lead negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership as a career employee at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, was speaking on a Washington International Trade Association podcast.
