The September 29, 2012, cutoff date for use of Automated Manifest System/Automated Commercial System (AMS/ACS) will affect non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCCs), terminal operators, port authorities and other entities that receive secondary party notifications in addition to master vessel operator common carriers (MVOCCs). As of Sept. 29, 2012, Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) will be the only acceptable electronic data interchange (EDI).

Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., voiced some concern over efforts to grant Russia permanent normal trade relations (PNTR), during a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing March 27, 2012. Burton, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia said he was concerned over the timing of graduating Russia from the Jackson-Vanik amendment, but also said he worried about what the alternative would be. Burton said if Russia is graduated from Jackson-Vanik, the U.S. should continue to support democracy and human rights in Russia.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection posted an updated version of its TRQ/TPL "threshold to fill" list, a quick reference to monitor TRQs and TPLs that are approaching their restraint limit or have filled their in-quota (low) rate. The list is divided into two sections: those that are at least 85% filled and those that are filled.

On March 27, 2012, the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights approved for full committee consideration the Global Online Freedom Act of 2011, which would prohibit export of telecommunications equipment that would help countries to censor and track its citizens. If passed, H.R. 3605 would result in a list of countries that restrict Internet use. Those countries would then be prohibited from import censorship technology from the U.S. The specific countries and technologies aren't yet identified.
The Canada Border Services Agency is providing information on its new Mandatory Electronic Export Reporting Policy1 for export shipments destined for non-U.S. destinations, which will be implemented April 1, 2012. On that date, CBSA will take steps to eliminate the manual reporting process form (Export Declaration, Form B13A) and implement mandatory electronic reporting. CBSA notes that this change will not affect SRP exporters2.
