The European Commission has issued a proposal to open, effective January 1, 2011, additional autonomous tariff quotas for certain agricultural and industrial products where production in the EU is insufficient to meet domestic needs at a zero duty rate for an appropriate volume. The proposal also calls for closing certain 2010 quotas, effective January 1, 2011, as it is no longer in the interest of the EU to continue to grant them.

The European Union reports that the EU27 countries' surplus in trade in goods with the U.S. almost doubled in the first six months of 2010. Machinery and vehicles accounted for almost 40% of these exports, followed by chemicals and other manufactured goods.
