The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) on September 13, 2010 determined to continue its antidumping (AD) duty order (Expiry Review No. RR-2009-002) on certain whole potatoes from the U.S. for use or consumption in the province of British Columbia.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) reported on September 24, 2010 that the results of a joint study on the benefits of free trade recommends that negotiations be initiated toward a substantive and ambitious trade agreement that would help meet the mutual goal of increasing bilateral trade between Canada and India to $15 billion annually within the next five years.
China's State news agency Xinhua.net reports that South Korea and Canada will resume negotiations during the week beginning September 27, 2010 on whether to ease Seoul's regulation of Canadian beef imports. South Korea banned the import of Canadian beef in May 2003 following an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or so-called mad cow disease, in Canada.
China's State news agency Xinhua.net reports that Canada may be just months away from becoming the first country in the world to have a free trade agreement with both the U.S. and the European Union (EU), according to Peter Van Loan, Canada's minister of international trade. Van Loan said Canada is "very encouraged" with the progress of the talks.
Canada's International Trade Tribunal reports that it will hold a public hearing on October 19, 2010 to consider an appeal on the classification of certain glue guns to detemine if these goods are properly classified under 8516.79.90 as other electro-thermic appliances, as determined by CBSA, or under 8465.99.90 as other machine-tools (including machines for nailing, stapling, glueing or otherwise assembling), as claimed by Rona Corporation Inc.
The Canada Border Services Agency is proposing to amend its NEXUS and CANPASS CBSA program regulations for low-risk travelers in order to allow accompanying spouses, common-law partners and dependents of persons who are serving abroad at a Canadian or U.S. diplomatic mission or consulate, or in the Armed Services, to be eligible for these programs if they meet the three year residency and validity period requirements.
The White House has posted remarks by President Obama and President Triet of Vietnam at the September 24, 2010 opening of the U.S.-ASEAN Leaders Meeting. President Obama stated that as U.S. exports to ASEAN countries are growing twice as fast as they are to other regions, Southeast Asia will be important to his goal of doubling U.S. exports.
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced the September 16, 2010 release of a report on the legal issues related to e-commerce between Japanese and overseas entities, in order to assess the issues that Japanese companies may encounter when conducting e-commerce with enterprises or consumers outside Japan.
