The Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted a draft proposed rule that would establish a mandatory safety standard for portable bed rails. According to the draft notice, the proposed standard would be substantially the same as the voluntary standard ASTM F 2085-10a, “Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Portable Bed Rails,” but with some modifications to strengthen it. The Commission is to vote on the proposed rule on April 6, 2011.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted a March 15, 2011 speech by Chairman Tenenbaum at the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association's summit. Among other things, Tenenbaum stated that CPSC should have final rules for toddler beds and bassinets in 2011 and proposed rules for swings, bed rails, play yards, and bedside sleepers. She also discussed the public database of consumer product safety incidents, encouraging businesses to register and stating that the agency was taking industry concerns about the database seriously.
The Government Accountability Office has concluded in a report to congressional committees that more government-wide planning is needed to address the fragmented oversight of food safety.

The Food and Drug Administration has denied requests for a stay of effective date and for a hearing on the final rule that amended the food additive regulations to provide for the safe use of ionizing radiation for the control of Vibrio species and other foodborne pathogens in fresh or frozen molluscan shellfish. The August 16, 2005, effective date is confirmed.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a notice announcing that a collection of information entitled "Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database" has been approved by the Office of Management and budget and has been assigned OMB control number 3041-0146. The approval expires on January 31, 2014. The notice adds that an agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to, a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB control number.
