The Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted the agenda, background information, and registration forms for the first North America Consumer Product Safety Summit to be held September 26-27, 2011 at CPSC Headquarters in Bethesda, MD.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on September 1, 2011 that Sunsations Inc. of Virginia has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $60,000 to settle allegations that it knowingly failed to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) that it sold children's hooded sweatshirts with drawstrings at the neck from March 2008 through November 2010. The penalty agreement has been provisionally accepted by the Commission.
On September 1, 2011, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with nine manufacturers and distributors, announced a voluntary recall of all pourable gel fuels made or sold by the companies due to burn and flash fire hazards. The recall involves an estimated 2 million units of various pourable gel fuels packaged in one-quart plastic bottles and one-gallon plastic jugs and sold in scented and non-scented formulations, which were sold since 2008.
On August 30-31, 2011, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Bersin and senior CBP staff held roundtable discussions with members of the trade community for a periodic "Trade Day" event, with participants including textile importer, surety, trucking, airport and other groups. During the dialog, USA-ITA discussed CBP's textile enforcement strategy, including the need to recognize good actors, and the association's interest in a textiles Center for Excellence and Expertise (CEE).

The Consumer Product Safety Commission will be discussing a proposed rule to establish a mandatory consumer product safety standard for play yards during a September 7, 2011 open meeting. The proposed standard is based on the voluntary standard ASTM F 406-11 - Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs/Play Yards. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced its weekly meeting on September 7, 2011 in which the staff briefs the Commission on various compliance matters. The meeting is closed to the public, and the agenda is confidential.
Sources at the Consumer Product Safety Commission state that CPSC has mistakenly reposted in the August 31, 2011 Federal Register its August 3, 2011 notice on the requirements for third-party labs to be accredited to test toys to the ASTM toy standard. CPSC had intended instead to post a notice on its education and outreach efforts to inform the public of the third-party testing and certification requirements for toys.
