The Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Jan. 30 signed an agreement pledging cooperation across several areas where their jurisdictions overlap. The agencies agreed to identify and potentially reduce the number of establishments subject to the “dual regulatory requirements of USDA and FDA, bringing greater clarity and consistency to jurisdictional decisions under USDA and FDA’s respective authorities, including transition period, and decreasing unnecessary regulatory burdens,” the agreement said. FDA and USDA also said they would “enhance” their collaboration in implementing FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act produce safety regulations, and coordinate the development of “efficient, science-based regulatory practices for products of biotechnology.”
