The Food and Drug Administration issued a draft guidance document May 17 outlining a proposed policy of enforcement discretion related to alternative names for a salt substitute. Under the proposed policy, FDA will not intervene when the term “potassium chloride salt” is used instead of potassium chloride on food labeling. FDA says the policy would promote the use of potassium chloride as a salt substitute, decreasing consumption of sodium and increasing consumption of under-consumed potassium. Comments on the draft policy are due July 19.
