The Food and Drug Administration is loosening requirements related to third-party certification of food suppliers during the COVID-19 pandemic, it said in a recent guidance document. FDA says that, for the duration of the public health emergency, it does not intend to enforce the requirement that certifications issued under its accredited third-party certification program may only remain valid for one year, provided other conditions are met. The certifications are used in the Voluntary Qualified Importer Program, as well as for admission of high-risk foods. FDA is also waiving a requirement for third-party accreditation bodies to conduct assessments of third-party certifiers that they accredit.
