Exploding demand for satellite communications mobility services -- driven by high-throughput satellites (HTS) and growing use of very small aperture terminals (VSAT) -- comes in the nick of time for a challenged satcom industry, Euroconsult Principal Adviser Susan Irwin said Thursday at a Global VSAT Forum conference. "Mobility is really a lifesaver." Mobile satcom growth also is leading to increased interference, an issue the industry is "trying to get its arms around," David Hartshorn, Global VSAT Forum (GVF) secretary general, told us.
CBP chose a proposal from the Greater Nogales Santa Cruz County Port Authority to upgrade refrigerated space as the first selection under the agency's Donation Acceptance Program, CBP said in an emailed news release. "The Greater Nogales Santa Cruz County Port Authority proposed upgrading existing air conditioned dock space at the Nogales West Land Port of Entry (LPOE) to food safety certified refrigerated space," it said. "The Nogales West LPOE processes more fresh produce than any other LPOE along the U.S.-Mexico border. The proposed upgrades seek to support the region’s growing produce industry by improving CBP’s ability to safely handle and inspect seafood, berries, avocados and other temperature-sensitive commodities." The donation program allows CBP and the General Services Administration to accept donations for port improvements (see 1410210015). “The Port Authority’s proposal is expected to greatly benefit the Arizona-Mexico trade corridor and the vast network of growers and shippers who rely on our ports of entry to deliver high-quality produce to the United States,” said Office of Field Operations Executive Assistant Commissioner Todd Owen.
The Donald Trump transition team met with telecom and tech industry officials for about an hour Friday at the BakerHostetler law firm in what attendees described as a listening meeting that provided little insight into Trump’s agenda. The Republican presidential nominee's speakers were all from the government-funded Trump presidential transition team, not the campaign itself. The initial invitation suggested New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, chairman of the Trump transition, might attend (see 1609290070). He wasn't there due to scheduling issues, said attendees; the meeting previously was set for Thursday.

GAO recommended the Office of Management and Budget “examine the feasibility of including LMR [land mobile radio] in its category management initiative,” in a 48-page report released Wednesday, and OMB “generally agreed.” GAO also released a supplement on its survey of civilian federal agencies on the topic. “The use of standards-based and multi-band LMR equipment has helped to enhance interoperability among agencies, but the use of proprietary features and other factors continue to hinder interoperability,” GAO said. “Almost all of the agencies that GAO surveyed reported using LMR equipment that meets voluntary technical standards, which have improved interoperability. Further, almost half of these agencies reported using multiband radios, which operate on multiple public-safety radio bands, to enhance interoperability.”

The Wireless Infrastructure Association expressed concerns about a draft standard treatment for telecom projects on federal land by the Department of Homeland Security and other federal departments and agencies. WIA released its emailed comments, which weren't posted online. “We commend the Standard Treatment Agencies for establishing best practices for the review of infrastructure siting on federal lands and properties, especially for installations that typically do not result in adverse effects on historical properties,” WIA said. “However, developing voluntary best practices does not go far enough to ensure expedited processing of broadband infrastructure siting applications.” A voluntary approach isn't in line with 2012's executive order 13616, on accelerating broadband infrastructure deployment, WIA said.
