The Texas Department of Public Safety has begun conducting its "enhanced safety inspections" at the Bridge of the Americas (BOTA) Commercial Cargo Facility in the El Paso port of entry, in an expansion of safety inspections that began April 27 on all commercial operating vessels exiting the Ysleta port of entry, CBP said in a CSMS message April 30. "This operation may continue to expand to other El Paso Field Office (EPFO) cargo facilities and will affect wait times and the flow of [commercial vehicles] making entry into the U.S. The duration of these enhanced inspections by DPS is unknown." CBP said it will "continuously assess" the situation, and updates for contingency plans will be provided "as they become available."
The Document Image System will allow CBP to respond to filers when document reviews are done in DIS for email document submissions, beginning June 11, the agency said in a CSMS message April 30. CBP also will add the ability to respond to filers through DIS regardless of the review status for automated broker interface submissions, the agency said, and will add three review status options -- accepted, rejected or under review -- for all document submissions.

The Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force is responsible for naming companies that are known to use Uyghur forced labor, including through labor transfers to other regions of China. But FLETF member and Deputy Undersecretary of Labor for International Affairs Thea Lee said she hasn't seen an effective way of monitoring those labor transfers, though the U.S. government believes they are growing.
The National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America asked the Federal Maritime Commission questions on the demurrage and detention final rule (see 2402230049). The NCBFAA, in comments dated April 22, said the questions were submitted on behalf of its members and other "industry stakeholders" and raised several questions that were not addressed in the final rule.
Hugo Boss has implemented a "comprehensive risk management system" to monitor compliance with human rights within its supply chain, the company said in a statement. The statement was in response to the Canada Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise's forced labor complaint against the retailer (see 2404260040). CORE said it has closed the complaint review.
A "snapshot" report just released by the Government Accountability Office reminded Congress that the GAO has studied -- and made recommendations -- on many aspects of how to manage economic competition with China, including providing more resources to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, improving information sharing with companies to keep more counterfeits out of U.S. commerce, and improving the tariff exclusions process for steel and aluminum imports.
